Is TGV First Class Worth It? (1st vs 2nd Class Comparison)

You are booking a high-speed train across France. The difference between 2nd Class and 1st Class is only €15.

Should you upgrade? What do you actually get?

Unlike airlines, where First Class means champagne and caviar, TGV First Class is more about space and silence.

Here is the exact breakdown of what is included (and what isn’t).

The Seat (The Main Reason to Upgrade)

The biggest difference is the layout.

  • 2nd Class: 2 seats – Aisle – 2 seats. (It can feel a bit cramped).
  • 1st Class: 2 seats – Aisle – 1 seat.
    • For Solo Travelers: This is huge. If you book a “Solo” seat in 1st Class, you have no neighbor. You have a window and an aisle all to yourself. Perfect for privacy.
    • Legroom: Significantly more space to stretch out.
    • Recline: The seats recline further (electric recline on newer TGV Océane trains).

The Atmosphere

  • 2nd Class: Often noisy. Families, groups, kids, phone calls.
  • 1st Class: Library vibes. It is mostly business travelers working on laptops. It is quiet. If you want to sleep or work, upgrade.

Do You Get Free Food?

NO.
This is the biggest myth. Unlike the Eurostar (Premier) or ICE (1st Class served at seat), TGV First Class does NOT include free food.

  • You still have to walk to the Bar Car to buy your coffee and sandwich, just like everyone else.
  • Exception: On some international routes (like TGV Lyria to Switzerland), you might get a meal at your seat, but on domestic French trains? Nothing.

Other Perks

  • Power Outlets: Guaranteed at every seat in 1st Class. (2nd Class usually has them too on newer trains, but not always).
  • Grand Voyageur Lounges: If you have a fully flexible “Business Première” ticket (very expensive), you get lounge access at the station. Standard 1st Class tickets usually do not get lounge access.

Summary: Should You Upgrade?

  • YES: If the price difference is under €20-€30. The solo seats and quiet atmosphere are worth it.
  • NO: If it’s double the price. You get there at the same speed, and you don’t get free food.

Verdict: Check the price gap on Trainline. If it’s small, treat yourself.
