The Swiss Chocolate Train: A Vintage Ride to Cheese & Chocolate Heaven

Only in Switzerland could someone invent a train dedicated entirely to cheese and chocolate.

The Chocolate Train (Train du Chocolat) runs from the palm trees of Montreux to the rolling green hills of Gruyères. It is a journey back in time, traveling in vintage 1915 “Belle Époque” Pullman carriages.

It is arguably the most delicious day trip in Europe.

Here is what to expect from this full-day adventure.

The Itinerary: A Perfect Day

The trip usually starts around 9:00 AM and ends around 4:00 PM. It is a packaged experience, meaning your ticket covers everything (transport, transfers, and entry fees).

Part 1: Coffee & Croissants

You board the vintage train in Montreux. As you climb away from Lake Geneva, coffee and chocolate croissants (pain au chocolat) are served at your seat. The interior is stunning—wood paneling, plush velvet seats, and brass lamps.

Part 2: The Cheese (Gruyères)

You arrive in the medieval village of Gruyères.

  • La Maison du Gruyère: You visit the famous cheese factory. You see exactly how the wheels of cheese are made (and yes, you get to taste them).
  • The Castle: You have free time to explore the 13th-century Gruyères Castle or eat a fondue lunch in the cobblestone village.

Part 3: The Chocolate (Broc)

A short bus transfer takes you to the nearby village of Broc, home to the Maison Cailler (Nestlé) chocolate factory.

  • The Tour: It’s like Willy Wonka’s factory. You learn the history of chocolate (it smells amazing inside).
  • The Grand Finale: The tour ends in the “Tasting Room.” This is an all-you-can-eat buffet of fresh Swiss pralines. You can eat as much as you want.

Is it a Train or a Bus? (Important!)

Technically, it is a hybrid.

  • Montreux to Montbovon: You travel on the magnificent vintage Belle Époque Train.
  • Transfers: The short hops between the train station, the cheese factory, and the chocolate factory are usually done by a dedicated luxury bus.
  • Return: You take the train back to Montreux in the late afternoon.

Prices & Rail Passes

This is a First Class only experience.

  • Standard Adult Ticket: Approx. CHF 99.
  • Swiss Travel Pass: You get a massive discount! You pay only the reservation supplement (approx CHF 69).
  • Eurail / Interrail: Valid for the train portion, but you usually have to pay extra for the “Chocolate Train package” (transfers + entries).

Is It Worth It?

  • For Serious Train Geeks: Maybe not. You spend half the day off the train exploring factories.
  • For Foodies & Families: YES. It is the ultimate Swiss cliché experience. The unlimited chocolate tasting alone is worth the trip.

When Does It Run?

It is a seasonal train.

  • Season: From May to September (sometimes October).
  • Frequency: Usually runs daily or several times a week depending on the month.

Summary

The Chocolate Train is pure indulgence. It combines spectacular lake views, historic luxury, salty cheese, and sweet chocolate. Go on an empty stomach.

Book your seat: Tickets sell out fast in summer. Check the GoldenPass Website or book a similar Gruyères Chocolate & Cheese Tour on GetYourGuide if the train is full.
