You want to bring your furry best friend on a Spanish adventure. But unlike Germany or the UK, where dogs are generally welcome on all trains, Spain has strict rules.
For years, large dogs were completely banned from Spanish high-speed trains. Thankfully, this is changing—but it is still confusing.
The rules depend entirely on how much your dog weighs and which company you choose (Renfe, Ouigo, or Iryo).
Here is everything you need to know to avoid a fine or being denied boarding.
The Golden Rule: The “10kg Limit”
For 90% of trains in Spain, the rule is simple:
- Small Dogs (< 10kg / 22 lbs): Allowed on almost all trains.
- Carrier Required: They must travel inside a pet carrier (max size approx. 60x35x35 cm).
- Behavior: They must not disturb other passengers.
If you have a Chihuahua, Yorkie, or Pug, you are fine. If you have a Golden Retriever, keep reading.
Pet Carrier: “Make sure your carrier fits the regulation size (60x35x35cm). We recommend this TSA Approved Soft Carrier.” (on Amazon).
Rules by Operator
1. Renfe (AVE, Alvia, Intercity)
The state operator has the most flexible rules, but also the most complex.
- Small Dogs (<10kg):
- Ticket: Often free in Premium/Elige Comfort classes. About €10-€20 in Basic class.
- Rule: In a carrier at your feet.
- Large Dogs (>10kg) – NEW!
- Renfe recently launched a “Large Dog Pilot Program” (Proyecto Mascota Grande) on select high-speed routes (mostly Madrid-Barcelona and Madrid-Valencia).
- Weight Limit: Up to 40kg.
- Restrictions: You must book a specific “Dog Friendly” seat. Only 2 large dogs per train.
- Muzzle: Mandatory while walking on the platform and boarding.
- Ticket: You must add the “Large Dog” extra during booking (approx €35).
2. Ouigo (The Budget Option)
- Weight Limit: Strictly max 10kg.
- Ticket: You must pay €10 per pet.
- Limit: Max 2 pets per passenger.
- Large Dogs: NOT allowed. If your dog is 11kg, they will not let you on.
3. Iryo (The Italian Operator)
- Weight Limit: Strictly max 10kg.
- Ticket: Pricing varies, usually around €10.
- Carrier: Must be in a carrier.
- Large Dogs: NOT allowed.
4. Cercanías (Local Commuter Trains)
This is the exception! On local Renfe commuter trains (Cercanías) around cities like Madrid and Barcelona:
- All Dogs Allowed: Yes, even big ones.
- Rules: Must be on a leash and wear a muzzle.
- Ticket: Usually free.
- Hours: Sometimes restricted during peak rush hours (check local signs).

What You Need to Bring
- Pet Passport / Health Certificate: Spain requires dogs to be microchipped and vaccinated against Rabies. Carry the papers!
- Muzzle: Even for small dogs, keep one in your bag just in case staff ask for it.
- The Right Carrier: Airlines are strict, and Spanish trains are getting stricter. Ensure your carrier is fully closable.
Muzzle: “Don’t get caught without a muzzle. This Soft Mesh Muzzle (on Amazon) is breathable and easy to carry.
Summary
If you have a small dog, Spain is easy—just book a “Mascota” ticket on Trainline or Omio.
If you have a large dog, you are limited to specific Renfe AVE trains. Book weeks in advance because the “Big Dog” spots sell out instantly.
