Lake Como is the playground of the rich and famous. But getting there doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
In fact, one of the most beautiful spots on the lake — Varenna — is accessible by a direct train from Milan for the price of a coffee and a sandwich.
Here is the step-by-step guide to the easiest DIY day trip from Milan.
The Destination: Why Varenna?
Most tourists think of “Como” (the city). But the city of Como is actually not the most scenic part.
You want to go to the “Golden Triangle” in the middle of the lake: Varenna, Bellagio, and Menaggio.
- Varenna is the only one with a direct train station. It is charming, colorful, and romantic.
The Route: Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino
- Departure: Milano Centrale Station.
- Arrival: Varenna-Esino Station.
- Operator: Trenord (Regional Trains).
- Duration: 1 hour 3 minutes.
- Frequency: Every hour (usually at :20 past the hour).
- Price: Approx €7.40 one way.
No Reservation Needed!
This is a Regionale train.
- Seats are not assigned.
- Tickets cannot sell out.
- Price is fixed (doesn’t go up last minute).
- Warning: Just remember to validate (stamp) your paper ticket in the green machines before boarding! If you use a digital ticket, check-in on the app.
The Journey (Sit on the Left!)
The ride itself is boring for the first 40 minutes (suburbs and tunnels).
But for the last 15 minutes, the train runs right along the eastern shore of the lake.
- Pro Tip: Sit on the LEFT side of the train departing Milan for stunning lake views.
What to Do Once You Arrive?
- Walk the “Lovers’ Walk”: From Varenna station, it’s a 10-minute walk along a cliffside red path (Passeggiata degli Innamorati) to the village center.
- Take the Ferry to Bellagio: The ferry terminal is right there. For ~€4.60, you can cross the lake to famous Bellagio in 15 minutes. It’s the cheapest “lake cruise” you’ll ever find.
- Villa Monastero: Visit the incredible botanical gardens in Varenna.

Summary
Forget the €150 private driver. Take the train.
Leave Milan at 9:20 AM. Be eating gelato by the lake by 10:30 AM.
Check schedules: Look for “Milano Centrale” to “Varenna-Esino” on Trainline or Omio.
