Portugal is perfect for train travel. The cities are compact, the scenery is beautiful, and the tickets are surprisingly cheap.
The most popular route connects the two biggest cities: Lisbon (the capital) and Porto (the wine capital).
Forget renting a car. The highway toll fees in Portugal are confusing and expensive. The train takes you center-to-center in under 3 hours while you sip coffee and watch the Atlantic coast roll by.
Here is everything you need to know about the Lisbon-Porto line.
The Trains: Alfa Pendular vs. Intercidades

You have two main choices run by CP (Comboios de Portugal):
1. Alfa Pendular (AP) – The Fast One
This is Portugal’s premier high-speed tilting train.
- Speed: Up to 220 km/h.
- Comfort: Modern, AC, free Wi-Fi, buffet car.
- Duration: ~2 hours 50 minutes.
- Price: Slightly more expensive (approx €30-€45).
2. Intercidades (IC) – The Intercity
- Speed: Standard speed. Stops more often.
- Comfort: Older carriages, slightly less legroom, but still comfortable.
- Duration: ~3 hours 15 minutes.
- Price: Cheaper (approx €25-€35).
Verdict: Spend the extra €5 for the Alfa Pendular. It’s smoother and faster.

The Stations (Don’t Get Lost!)
This is where tourists get confused. Both cities have multiple stations.
- In Lisbon:
- Santa Apolónia: The main terminal near the Alfama district (Old Town). Most trains start/end here. Go here.
- Oriente: The modern futuristic station near the airport. Trains stop here too.
- In Porto:
- Campanhã: The main hub on the edge of the city. All fast trains stop here.
- São Bento: The famous historic station in the absolute center. Note: Fast trains (AP) do not go to São Bento. You must get off at Campanhã and take a free commuter train (5 mins) to São Bento.
Is It Scenic?
Yes!
- Best Side: Sit on the LEFT side when going North (Lisbon to Porto) to see the ocean views near Aveiro.
- The train passes through olive groves, vineyards, and glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean.
How to Get Cheap Tickets
Portuguese trains offer “Promo Tickets” if you book 1-2 weeks in advance.
- You can get First Class (Conforto) for as little as €22!
- Standard Class (Turística) can drop to €10-€15.
The Must-See: São Bento Station
Even if your train stops at Campanhã, you must visit São Bento Station in Porto.
It is covered in 20,000 blue and white azulejo tiles depicting the history of Portugal. It is arguably the most beautiful train station in the world.
Summary
- Book the Alfa Pendular.
- Book 2 weeks early for massive discounts.
- Don’t forget to transfer to São Bento to see the tiles.
