The Douro Line (Linha do Douro): Portugal’s Most Scenic Train Ride

Imagine a train track that hugs the riverbank so tightly, you feel like you are floating on the water. On one side, the majestic Douro River. On the other, steep terraced vineyards climbing towards the sky.

This is the Linha do Douro.

Starting from Porto, this railway line cuts deep into the UNESCO World Heritage wine region. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful railway journeys in the world—yet a ticket costs less than a bottle of cheap wine.

Here is how to do the Douro Valley by train (DIY style).

The Douro Line (Linha do Douro) Portugal’s Most Scenic Train Ride

The Route: Porto to Pocinho

  • Start: Porto São Bento Station (The beautiful tiled one).
  • End: Pocinho (Near the Spanish border).
  • Duration: ~3.5 hours (Full route).
  • Key Section: The magic happens after Régua. The section from Régua to Pocinho is pure gold.

Where to Stop? (The Best Towns)

You don’t have to ride all the way to the end.

  1. Régua: The main hub. Good for visiting the Douro Museum, but very busy.
  2. Pinhão:The Highlight.
    • This is the heart of the wine country.
    • The station itself is decorated with stunning blue tiles (azulejos).
    • Top wineries (Quintas) are walking distance from the station.
  3. Pocinho: The end of the line. Very quiet, dry, and dramatic scenery.

The Train: Standard vs. Historic

  1. Regular Regional Train (CP):
    • Runs daily, year-round.
    • Cheap (€10-€15).
    • Windows open (great for photos!).
    • Tip: Sit on the RIGHT side leaving Porto for river views.
  2. The Historical Steam Train:
    • Runs only in summer (June-Oct).
    • Steam locomotive + vintage carriages.
    • Pricey (~€50).
    • Route: Just Régua to Tua.

A Perfect Day Trip Itinerary (DIY)

Skip the €100 bus tour. Do this instead:

  • 09:00: Take the train from Porto São Bento.
  • 11:30: Arrive in Pinhão.
  • 12:00: Walk to a nearby winery (e.g., Quinta do Bomfim) for a tasting and lunch with a view.
  • 14:00: Take a 1-hour boat cruise from Pinhão harbor (right next to the station).
  • 16:00: Train back to Porto.

Is It Worth It?

Yes. The engineering is incredible (tunnels, bridges) and the landscape is unique. It’s slow travel at its best.

Warning: It gets HOT in summer (40°C / 104°F). The regular trains usually have AC, but the vintage ones can be stifling. Bring water.

Summary

The Douro Line is the cheapest way to explore a world-class luxury destination. You get the same views as the VIP river cruises for a fraction of the price.
