Train from Lisbon to Sintra: How to Visit the Fairytale Castles (DIY Guide)

Sintra is not just a town; it’s a fantasy world. Colorful palaces, misty forests, and ancient castles perched on mountaintops.

It is the #1 day trip from Lisbon. And because parking is a nightmare (seriously, don’t drive), taking the train is the only smart way to go.

Here is how to get there, avoid the ticket lines, and navigate the bus system once you arrive.

The Route: Lisbon (Rossio) to Sintra

  • Departure:Rossio Station.
    • Located right in the city center (near the main square). Look for the beautiful horseshoe-shaped arches on the façade.
  • Arrival: Sintra Station.
  • Duration: 40 minutes.
  • Frequency: Every 20-30 minutes.
  • Price: Free with the “Lisboa Card” or approx €2.40 one-way.

The “Viva Viagem” Card Trick

Do not stand in the massive line at the ticket office in Rossio.

  1. Buy a reusable green “Viva Viagem” card (€0.50) from a machine.
  2. Load it with “Zapping” credit (add €10-€15).
  3. Result: You can tap on and off the train AND use it for the buses in Sintra. It’s cheaper and faster.

Arrival in Sintra: The Bus Trap

The train station is at the bottom of the hill. The palaces (Pena Palace, Moorish Castle) are at the top. It is a steep, grueling hike.
Don’t walk unless you are very fit.

You have two bus options (Scotturb):

  1. Bus 434 (The Pena Circuit): Station -> National Palace -> Moorish Castle -> Pena Palace.
    • Warning: The line for this bus can be insane in summer.
  2. Tuk-Tuks / Uber: Often worth the extra money to skip the bus line and get straight to the top.

Which Palaces to See?

Initiation Well A well in Quinta da Regaleira (very Instagrammable).

You can’t see them all in one day. Pick 2.

  1. Pena Palace: The famous yellow/red castle. Must-see, but extremely crowded. Book a timed slot online in advance!
  2. Quinta da Regaleira: The gothic mansion with the famous “Initiation Well” (spiral staircase into the ground). Stunning gardens. Walking distance from town center.
  3. Moorish Castle (Castelo dos Mouros): Best views, less crowded. Great for walking the walls.

Summary

  • Take the train from Rossio.
  • Use a Zapping card to skip lines.
  • Go to Pena Palace first thing in the morning (9:30 AM).

Ready for the fairytale? Buy your Pena Palace Tickets online to guarantee entry (they sell out!).
